Ran one track this afternoon.

Time laid: 4:15 pm
Time ran: 4:34 am
Length: ~ 20'
Temperature: ~ 41F
Conditions: Windy, drizzling and c-c-c-cold

This was the 5th track I laid out for Tilly this week. Unfortunately I was not able to film the others. After I started laying out the track I noticed we were going to have to move over dirt instead of grass for a short while. I suspected this might throw her for a loop but I decided to try it anyways since we were short on daylight and the weather was quickly turning. On the video you can see she gets confused for a little bit not knowing what to do and looking at me for direction. I chose to wait her out and see if she would resume on her own. Upon reflection I think this might have been a good place to try and water her?

This track went very well. I love how she got right to it when I prompted her at the beginning. It is amazing to see. Even though she is still not super consistent in her straightness or I in reinforcing with walking forwards at the right moment, I feel we are getting better and it's slowly feeling more natural and less awkward.

  1. Is there a video of this one? So, things like dirt happen—shuffle your feet, drop even more food, and maybe put a little jackpot when you get back into the grass. I wouldn’t stop to water (IMHO, a TD dog shouldn’t need water or rescenting unless conditions are really intense—although I’d do it if I needed to…I’d be desperate!). So rather, be aware when you cross harder cover, and make that cover more appealing than the grass!

  2. OMG, I loved this! That tail! Yep, a little more food over the dirt would have resolved her confusion . Nice work!

  3. Clever beast!! I loved this too! Your leash length is perfect, your food drop rate is perfect, she is catching on. Hope you can get her up to your local school this week and put in a little bit longer track, or maybe two! Good work!

  4. Jumping in to say this was GREAT! As Judi & Mary Ann said - the extra reinforcement over tougher terrain and jackpots just past will help build her confidence. Definitely longer tracks with everything you did here - good leash length, food spacing, etc!

    1. Thanks Jen! Ok for the longer tracks and I did try a dirt only track this week with more treats and we were successful if not a tad confused at first haha
